Bipartisan group also scheduled to go to South Korea and Japan.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York along with Senator Mike Crapo of Idaho will be leading a bipartisan Senate delegation to Beijing next week. The six senators will visit both government and business leaders in China, and then South Korea and Japan. Senator Schumer’s office said their goal is “advancing U.S. economic and national security interests” in the region.
The senators hope to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The Chinese Embassy has not confirmed the meeting. In August, Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo said that the policies China has put in place against American businesses in recent years have made China “uninvestable.”
Senator Schumer’s office said the group “will focus on the need for reciprocity in China for U.S. businesses that will level the playing field for American workers, as well as on maintaining U.S. leadership in advanced technologies for national security.”
Joining the trip will be Senators Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire, John Ossoff of Georgia, Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, and John Kennedy, also of Louisiana. Their meetings will take place during the Columbus Day recess.
